Neverland Research

Neverland is populated with mythological creatures and spirits from Japanese mythology.

With a volcano at it's heart, Neverland is a small island surrounded turbulent ocean seas.

Lost Boys Research

I imagined the lost boys donned these costumes for 2 reasons.  One because Peter was a fox spirit, they treated him like a deity and wanted to emulate him in every way.  The second was to prey on the Pirates' superstitious nature and fear of the Neverland island, which was teeming with spirits, demons, and creatures of all sorts.  They would always have the upper hand.

Hook and the Pirates Research

In the very beginning, Bill encouraged me to tell my story in a way we haven't seen it before.  I struggled initially , but when I began to research all of the pirate factions in history, I came across these guys that were active in Asia 13th-16th centuries.
The WOKOU PIRATES
And I was off and running from there,  I know had a world and time period I could draw from.  So I started developing Captain Hook first.

Kitsune
In my research, I came across descriptions of the Kitsune.  Fox spirits common in Japanese folklore.  Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom.  Foremost among these is having the ability to shapeshift.  The Kitsune are known to be mischievous tricksters, often preying on prideful samurai.  (Perfect for a Peter character!) Because of their potential power and influence, some people make offerings to them as a deity, the Lost Boys in this case.
